Is it good to have bridge job and how as a new immigrant or student like yourself it will benefit you?

One of the biggest challenges a new immigrant faces in Canada is “Canadian Work Experience”. Honestly, its not something very difficult to gain but why is it important — so that you can understand the ways and norms of Canada. Be it learning tools that are specific to Canada or work culture, you are expected to have “Canadian Work Experience”.

So, what is bridge job? A job that acts a bridge where you learn and grow yourself professionally to achieve your dream career.

(I will share a real life incident that I witnessed a few days back, someone, let’s call them Thambi, approached me saying that they are struggling to get a relevant job in their field. Thambi had a very little networking and they didn’t do any bridge job in past. It was certainly a difficult time for Thambi, anyways don’t be Thambi. Eventually, I did help them getting started.)

Is it really required to have a bridge job? Well, its not mandatory but you will:

  1. Gain (kind of repeating myself) Canadian Work Experience
  2. Improve your communication skills
  3. Build professional network
  4. Have some form of income
  5. Develop new skills

How do you maximize bridge job? Try one or many of these actions — Gain experience, Develop skills, Build networks, Improve language, Earn income, Gain confidence, Explore industries, Identify strengths, Get references, Launch career.

Finally, how will one find a bridge job?

  1. Use online job boards: Websites such as Indeed, LinkedIn, and Glassdoor can be great resources for finding bridge jobs. You can search for jobs based on your skills, experience, and location, and apply directly through the website.
  2. Network: Attend career fairs and industry events, and connect with professionals in your field. Let them know you are looking for a bridge job and ask for their advice and guidance.
  3. Consider volunteering: Volunteering can be a great way to gain experience, build your network, and demonstrate your commitment to your field. Look for volunteer opportunities that align with your career goals and interests.
  4. Get creative: Think outside the box and explore alternative ways to gain experience and develop your skills. For example, you could start your own blog or YouTube channel to showcase your expertise and creativity.

Remember, finding a bridge job may take time and effort, but the rewards can be significant. A bridge job can provide valuable experience, connections, and financial stability, helping you to achieve your career goals in Canada.
